1. About RSend
RSend is a "client-server" application based on .NET Remoting technology. It is designed for instant
messaging between users in domain (LAN and WAN) networks in real time. You can use RSend in a
non-domain network with little loss of functionality if users and computers names are unique. Rsend provides high performance
and scalability. Average delivery time (through the use of asynchronous multithreading data transfer) to large groups of recipients
is 1-3 seconds (depending on the number of recipients, the state of remote computers). RSend provides
the ability to select recipients by various criteria: user names, computer names, public (domain) and
private groups. RSend is easy to use and does not require any support from administrator.
For convenience, RSend has additional features:
- Built-in filter and search;
- Quick reply to incoming messages;
- Confirmation of message delivery;
- Multi-language support;
- Command-line utility;
- Online help, hotkeys.
2. System requirements and program structure
System requirements:
- Operation system: Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 2003 - 2012.
On computers running Windows XP / 2003 must be installed .NET Framework 3.5. To install it via group policy you can use
startup vbs script to install .NET Framework 3.5.1.
- Exceptions in Windows Firewall on TCP ports used in
the program: the default is 5556 for client and 5555 for server.
- Domain structure of the network. You can use RSend
in a non-domain network with little loss of functionality (public groups usage, additional user/computer information from domain)..
Program structure:
- RSendServer provides a user registration, messaging, provides access
to public (domain) and private groups, logging.
- RSendClient is installed on the client side.
- RSendAlert is a client command-line utility.
3. Operation
3.1. Start the program
RSend Client starts on your computer automatically (configurable by the administrator) and
RSend icon appears in the tray of the computer. This means that RSend Client successfully
established a connection to RSend Server (online mode) and ready to go. If the icon has a
darkened view, it means that there is no connection to RSend Server (offline mode) and you
cannot send/receive messages. In addition RSend Client status bar displays information about
the state of channel to the server.
Possible causes: either there is no channel to the server, or the server is disabled. RSend Client
automatically switches to online when the cause is eliminated.
3.2. Send message
To send a message, click on the "Send Message" (or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-N). In the new
window please click on the "Select Recipients". Select the desired tab: user names, computer
names, public (domain) groups or private groups. Tabs with user and computer names reflect
all registered clients on the server in real time.
Tip. There are built-in search of the recipients. Type the first letter on the keyboard
inside the tab. The cursor will be positioned at the first suitable match. If you type a few letters,
then the gap between a set of characters should be minimal, otherwise the system will associate
the follow-up letter in the search as the first.
Tick the recipients and click on the "Select". In the previous window in the field "Send to" will be
recipients of the message. The list of recipients may contain users and computers names
simultaneously. If there is a double entry RSend send only once. If you did a mistake when
selecting recipients, click on the "Clear" and repeat your actions again. Enter your text in the
"Text" field and press on the "Submit." The maximum message size can not exceed 1000 characters.
Messages where the text was typed without spaces is incorrectly displayed to recipients.
If you want to be sure of your message delivery, select the appropriate checkbox
for confirmation of delivery.
3.3. Built-in filter
RSend Client has a built-in filter for granular selection of recipients. If user and/or computer
names have identifying characteristics (prefixes, suffixes), meaning the name of the unit, location
and other, then you can select the specific grpoups of recipients with a filter.
For example, you wish to send a message to staff in city "Abcd". Select the "Computer names"
tab, in the "Filter" type letters "abcd", in the drop-down list select "Start with" or "Exists" and then
click on the "Apply." As a result, the screen will show only users (or computers) in city "Abcd". Next,
check the "Select All" and press on the "Select".
3.4. Using of public (domain) groups
RSend has ability to send messages using public (domain) groups. Membership in
these groups reflects domain groups and is controlled by system administrators
of the company.
To send a message to a certain public group (users or computers) click on the "Send Message".
In the new window, click on the "Select Recipients" and then select the "Public Groups" tab.
Tick the desired group (or several groups) and click on the "Select". In the previous window in the field
"Send To" will be recipients of the message. If the field "Send to" does not contain any recipients,
this means that all members of the selected group are not currently connected (offline).
Enter the desired text in the "Text" field and press on the "Submit."
3.5. Creating and using private groups
RSend has the ability to send messages using private groups. To send a message to certain
private group, click on the "Send Message". In the new window, click on the "Select Recipients"
and then select the "Private Groups" tab. To create a private group, click on the "Add" button.
In the new window, specify the name of the group and group members. Group members (users
and/or computers names) must be divided by a semicolon. For example, User1; User2; Computer3;
Computer4;. Save your work. You can edit private groups and if unnecessary – delete.
Tick the desired group (or several groups) and click on the "Select". In the previous window in the
field "Send To" will be recipients of the message. If the field "Send to" does not contain any
recipients, this means that all members of the selected group are not currently connected (offline).
Enter the desired text in the "Text" field and press on the "Submit."
Tip. To reduce manual work with membership of private group apply the following approach.
Select the "User names" or "Computer names" tab, tick your recipients,
then right click and select "Copy" (or use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl-C").
Go back to the tab "Private Groups", create or open the desired group, right
click on the field "Members" and select "Paste" (or use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl-V").
